"The Process", by Kai Cofer is a a musical play in development. It is a modern adaptation of "The Trial" by Frank Kafka. It is completely scored for a mixed a cappella ensemble of two women and five men without any instrumentation other than beatboxing and hand rhythms. Kai is a wonderful playwriter to work with. Welcome to the first eight songs of "The Process." (in performance order)

Up Against The Wall

"The Process" opens up with this song in which the two ladies of the cast set the stage for the story of our main character, Although the promotional audio/video has the two ladies singing, in fact these parts are intended for rap above a contemporary rhythm and beat performed by the men.

You Made A Mistake

Our main character, Joseph can't believe he was just served an arrest warrant. It simply has to be a mistake, or is it? Again the lead part on the verses is intended to be rapped even though the promotional audio/video you hear on the song page is sung.

I Need to Take a Coffee Break

As we get to a workplace scene, one of our characters shows great reverence to the workplace alter of fresh brewed coffee. After all how would any work get done without the morning brew. This one is a crisp contemporary a cappella harmony piece intended to pick you up a bit.

Somewhere Under the Rainbow

Our soloist now anticipates an upcoming journey to the city of Seattle, dreaming about the atmosphere (often damp) and the city's vibe (often caffeinated). This song reflects faint feelings of that famous "over the rainbow" song and a dream about coming to the real Emerald City of Seattle.

You Need a Lawyer

Needing a little friendly advice, our main character turns to a friend with recommendations. After all, in these circumstances getting legal advice is fraught with snafus, a primary theme for this song. Anyway,, a nice solo/ensemble a cappella piece with an unexpected lyrical ending.

A song that is getting into "The Process" that our main character endures in his hope to clear up the mess he is in. But he is just one of many caught in the gears of the system. The song finishes with a catchy final four-part harmony that lyrically and emphatically ends on the title of the song.

A little bluegrass country a cappella celebrating the fine hobby and pursuit of growing beards up in them backwoods. A little foot stomping, hand clapping, and fine steady rhythm that'll pick your feet up. Just hoping the feet don't trip on the excessive "all the way down to the floor" beard growth.

We Don't Appreciate Your Swearing

Another song about the friction our main character faces in the ever complicating circumstances surrounding his arrest. And in this song, it begins to get a little emotional. But a nice short and sweet two verse song with another surprising ending.
